For hours they searched through the trees, calling out into the forest. They combed clearings, checked along creeks, and scanned the tops of cliffs. Just when their energy began to fade, someone pointed toward a tall pine tree in the distance. High up in the branches was a massive nest. Could it belong to the eagle? And could the puppy still be alive up there?
Led by Mr. Jensen, the neighbors crept closer. The nearer they got, the more movement they noticed among the branches—small, soft shapes fluttering in the nest. A hush fell over the group. Each footstep on the forest floor sounded too loud. Then, when they finally looked up into the nest, what they saw made them gasp aloud.
